Like Tears in the Rain - Dear America

Dear America,

Lately, it has dawned on me that the opportunity to hear stories first-hand about the greatest hits of the last century is slowly but surely slipping through my fingers. I've been spending a lot of time recently looking into what life was like during the Cold War and some of the surrounding events that I didn't even know had happened. Sure, the internet is a thing I suppose, but maybe the old-school fella in me yearns for the chance to ask questions and hear the answers without spell-check.

It's amazing what the generations before us experienced, and although I wouldn't knock my own personal travels, I worry that I may never get another chance to ask about "back then." How many folks are left that marched with Dr. King? Who can still speak to what it was like to live in the USSR? Does anyone still remember the last time that people got drafted? It fills me with unease to acknowledge that there is even a limited amount of folks who will be able to recall what it was like to hear Tom Petty or Eddie Van Halen play live.

What a party this must've been...

These stories won't be around forever. One day, all we'll have will be books, old videos, and some groovy records to jam to. There's a whole plethora of tales that deserve to be heard and I'm bullish enough to say that I'm not the only wiseguy that will be missing out by the time the curtain closes on the next generation.

Can you do me a favor please? If it's not too much to ask? Next time you find yourself sitting next to someone older than you, would you simply ask them "what was it like back then?" We're nearly out of time. Oh, and while you're at it, could you write it all down and send it to me? I can only do so much.

Sincerely,

Calhoun
